Prospective Students

This year’s competitions are now closed. Check back in November for details of the 2019/20 competition.

The White Rose College of the Arts & Humanities is offering at least 48 PhD studentships starting in October 2019 at Leeds, Sheffield and York, through the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) Doctoral Training Partnerships (DTP2) scheme.

This year TWO types of studentship are offered: Open Competition and Collaborative Doctoral Award (CDA). You can make only ONE funding application to WRoCAH so need to choose the scheme that suits you best. The table below summarises the differences.

WRoCAH AHRC Open Competition

WRoCAH AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Awards (CDAs)

  • Student-led projects
  • Apply for a place of study FIRST
  • Usually an interview with your chosen department
  • Apply to WRoCAH for funding SECOND
  • Defined projects with external collaborating partner organisation
  • Expressions of interest FIRST (deadline dates vary for each project – beware!)
  • Usually an interview with the project team where a student will be selected to apply for funding through the CDA competition*
  • You must apply for a place of study before submitting your funding application.**
  • Apply to WRoCAH for funding SECOND

Click on the links below to find out more about each type of Studentship and how to apply
The closing deadline for funding applications to WRoCAH is 17:00 GMT on Wednesday 23 January 2019

this is not a guarantee of funding at this point, it means you are the nominated candidate for that project
** The point at which you need to do this varies between projects – some require the study place application to be submitted as the EoI while others do not require this until a student is selected to be put forward for funding.
