There are THREE additional funding streams students who started from 2019-2025 can access. These funding streams are for:

  • Individual research-related activities
  • Organising events
  • The required elements of the WRoCAH training programme

These three streams can provide a contribution towards travel and accommodation costs as well as conference registration fees and catering costs for events. All WRoCAH funds are provided by the AHRC or through match funding from the three Universities so all applications to all funding schemes are expected to be well-researched, evidenced and demonstrate good value for money as we are spending public funds.

What kinds of activities are covered under each funding stream?

Small and Large Awards Student Led Forums Project Awards
  • Primary research trips, eg. to archives, museums, private houses or for interviews
  • Training courses, providing you with essential skills to complete your research
  • Summer schools, allowing you to spend an extended period of time focusing on one aspect of your research with expert tuition and with other scholars in a similar area
  • Conferences, as a presenter or panel chair or just as an attendee
  • Any other research-related costs

AND

  • Long-term data storage, in line with your Research Data Management Plan
  • Reading groups, these can be small regular groups meeting on a specific theme
  • Research skills training, where you share a need with other researchers and know a master practitioner who can provide expert tuition and support. These can be anything from 1 day to a week residential.
  • Symposiums, to bring other doctoral researchers together to share research-in-progress on a specific or broad theme or with an interdisciplinary focus
  • Conferences, bringing together doctoral researchers with the wider academic research community in one or linked fields
  • General outreach activities, with a partner organisation where the activity is not directly related to your research
  • Internationalisation Project, eg. Desk exchange, being a visiting researcher, international conference organisation
  • Researcher Employability Project (REP), 1-3 months with a partner organisation working on a project using your doctoral-level research skills but unrelated to your research
  • Knowledge Exchange Project, taking your research to non-academic audiences from the general public to policy-makers or private businesses

What kinds of costs can be covered?

Limits apply to some categories of cost. Please make sure you have read and understand these before making any application.

The Small and Large awards schemes can contribute to costs relating to your:

  • Travel and accommodation
  • Conference registration fees
  • Training course fees
  • Entrance fees
  • Small consumables
  • Payments to interviewees
  • Printing and postage relating to primary research, eg. questionnaire mailing
  • Long-term data storage charges
The Student-Led Forums scheme can contribute to costs relating to:

  • Daytime catering
  • Conference dinners
  • Room hire charges
  • PGR student travel bursaries to encourage attendance
  • Travel to organising group meetings
  • Travel and accommodation for speakers
  • Printing and publicity costs
The Project Awards scheme can contribute to costs relating to:

  • Travel and accommodation
  • Conference registration fees
  • Project-related consumables costs
  • Subsistence where self-catering accommodation cannot be booked

Important things to know

  • WRoCAH awards are a contribution to costs, they may not cover 100% of the costs for an activity.
  • No funds are released in advance, all claims against WRoCAH awards are made on the basis of receipts submitted.
  • We cannot make any retrospective awards, all applications must be for activities taking place in the future.
  • We can’t make adjustments to awards after letters have been issued except under exceptional circumstances.
  • Small Awards can only be claimed after the event has taken place and are claimed from the WRoCAH office
  • Costs relating to all other awards can be claimed immediately on receipt of the award letter from your home university.
  • All claims must be made no later than 1 month after the end of the activity.
