About Viva Survivor

The viva is the culmination of your PhD process: a lot of work has led to this point, but a feeling of anxiety can go hand-in-hand with the sense of achievement at completing your thesis. For many PhD candidates the time leading up to the viva is filled with stress about the day, and uncertainty about what their examiners may ask.

Viva Survivor is a half day workshop, led by Dr Nathan Ryder, viva coach, author and creator of the Viva Survivors podcast, which can help you to prepare effectively for your viva, so you can approach it with confidence.

Who is this workshop for?

Viva Survivor is a session for postgraduate researchers who are close to submitting their thesis and who want to get some ideas about how best to prepare for their upcoming viva.

During the session we will consider the purpose of the viva and different approaches to preparing for it.

By the end of the session participants will:

  • Have a better understanding of what to expect during their viva
  • Be able to identify sources of support for their viva preparation
  • Have developed strategies to prepare themselves and their thesis for the viva
  • Have explored questions that are frequently asked in vivas

What previous participants have said:

“Everything about it was useful. The mock viva questions were brilliant.”

“It was great to be able to ask the questions that we all want to know the answers to. I feel a lot more confident now.”

“The opportunity to raise concerns about the viva was very good; Nathan was really knowledgeable and friendly.”

100% of previous participants said that they would recommend Viva Survivor to other doctoral researchers.
